"The World of Ise Katagami: Forming a Subspace: Edo Komon," a collaborative exhibition by architect Jo Nagasaka and Edo Komon craftsman Yuichi Hirose, will be held at EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando from July 17 to August 26.

More than a century and a half after the wave of Japonism swept across Western society in the late 19th century, Japanese culture is once again attracting intense attention. Amid this trend, the world of Ise Katagami, which influenced both Art Nouveau and Liberty Prints, is being revived in the modern era through an exhibition of kimono and bolts of fabric dyed using the traditional techniques of the Hirose Dyeing Factory, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Furthermore, architect Jo Nagasaka, inspired by the worldview of Edo Komon, collaborated with Yuichi Hirose, the fourth-generation head of the Hirose Dye Factory, to create experimental fabrics and kimonos, providing an opportunity to reexamine the very essence of Edo Komon.

The designs range from traditional geometric patterns to those symbolizing the beauty of nature, to those reflecting the down-to-earth and playful spirit of the people of Edo. It's said that Philipp Franz von Siebold brought back a huge collection of stencils along with ukiyo-e prints at the end of the Edo period, and that its graphic nature is said to have had a significant influence on 19th-century European crafts and design.
The actual stencils are not just designs; in order for a design to be utilized in dyeing, a "skill" is imprinted on each and every paper, tool, and process, a physical sensation that goes beyond knowledge and is cultivated over the artisan's long experience. Through a challenging collaboration with Nagasaka Jo, who works on Blue Bottle Coffee stores, among other things, we attempt to create a "subspace," a space-time continuum where normal physical laws do not apply, encompassing the microscopic, multifaceted worldview contained within the two-dimensional space of Edo Komon.
A talk session featuring Nagasaka Jo and Hirose Yuichi is scheduled for July 19th, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
