Louis Vuitton to hold show at the Fondation Marguerite-Aimé Maeght in the South of France [Cruise 2019]

May 29, 2018

Louis Vuitton held its 2019 Cruise Collection show at the Fondation Marguerite-Aimé Maeght in the south of France on the evening of May 28th local time.

The Fondation Maeght, which houses the collection of sisters Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, is located in the mountains of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where works by master painters and sculptors such as Chagall, Giacometti, Matisse, and Miró coexist with the nature that surrounds the museum. Set in a place that evokes the energy and freedom of a time when artists built artistic utopias, Nicolas Ghesquière created a unique fusion of fashion and art.

This season, Ghesquière launched an accessories line in collaboration with Grace Coddington, former creative director of American Vogue and Anna Wintour's right-hand woman. Coddington, who is now a writer, illustrator, and editor, is also known as a huge animal lover, and her fantasy animals are featured in the accessories. This capsule collection will be available at select Louis Vuitton stores from October.

The show's soundtrack was composed by French artist WOODKID. WOODKID is the musical pseudonym of Yoann Lemoine, a writer who also works in graphic design and direction. At the beginning of the show, Jennifer Connelly read excerpts from Grace Coddington's memoir, "Grace: What Fashion Taught Me" (Random House), accompanied by music. Prior to the show, a live performance took place in the "Giacometti Garden" at the Maeght Foundation, where WOODKID recreated a sound sculpture, a unique instrument made of glass and metal, invented by the French musicians brothers François and Bernard Baschet in the 1950s.

"This space has a remarkable family history and a story that only a gallery with a passion for art can tell. Together with the many artists whom the family associated with as friends and patrons, they have built a rare space for artistic dialogue. All of the timeless works seem to intertwine, creating an artistic flow. It is a place that is intelligent, beautiful, and witty, where the installations resonate with nature and the four seasons in a special way," says Nicolas Ghesquière.
