What are the highlights of Roppongi Art Night 2018, which will be held from sunset to dawn this weekend?

May 25, 2018

Roppongi Art Night 2018 will be held over two days, May 26th and 27th. A press preview was held at Roppongi Hills on the 24th ahead of the event.

Roppongi Art Night is a one-night-only art feast set in the streets of Roppongi. Its distinctive Roppongi style, with a core time from sunset to dawn, has been well-received by people outside of art circles.

The ninth event will be held under the theme "The City Dreams of Art." This year, the three featured artists are Kaneuji Teppei, Kito Kengo, and Ujino Muneteru. Many artists will be showcasing their works at art spots scattered throughout Roppongi, including Roppongi Hills, the National Art Center, Tokyo, and Tokyo Midtown, as well as between buildings and on the bridge piers at Roppongi Crossing. At the press preview, Roppongi Art Night Executive Committee Chairman Nanjo Fumio said, "Until now, we've appointed one main artist, but this time we've commissioned three. Furthermore, thanks to a subsidy from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, we've been able to strengthen our program, adding works by Daan Roosegaarde and Yoko Ono, making this an international and rich art night." Kim commented, "The idea was to have the city perform for 24 hours, expressing how the city is made up of the accumulation of each individual's body and movement." Kito explained, "Since the theme is dreams, I wanted it to transform into something that becomes like an illusion." Ujino said, "I combined elements you might see on the streets, such as Tokyo's mustard-colored taxis, cranes, and traffic cones." Also, special guest for Roppongi Art Night 2018, Nana Katase, performed with DUNDU, a giant 5-meter glowing puppet from Germany, making its first visit to Japan. "At Art Night, you can experience many artworks and feel something without having to think too hard. I want not only art lovers but also people who don't often have the opportunity to see art to come," he said.
