WERC, an artist collective based in Groningen, Netherlands, creates graffiti art using AR (augmented reality) technology.

First, they draw a black outline, then create five designs that precisely fit it. By scanning and digitizing these, they can freely edit the combinations. The edited designs are then projected onto the wall, incorporating animation. It's a very unique attempt, as there is no need to decide on a single final image and they can change it each time. It offers a high degree of freedom and is attracting a lot of attention as a type of graffiti that has never been seen before.

WERC has been researching AR technology and investigating the boundaries between the real and digital worlds. He has also worked as a VJ at various events and festivals, and the knowledge and experience he gained there was extremely helpful in creating this AR graffiti piece. Jelle Valk, one of WERC's founders, was fascinated by the world of graffiti even before founding the group. After watching the documentary "Style Wars," an essential documentary on graffiti, he was deeply inspired by New York and the European artists influenced by it. Valk comments that graffiti is a form of personal expression, self-improvement, and artistic pleasure. Graffiti is an activity done for oneself, not for others, and is a means of communication that proves that "when I was somewhere, I created something there." WERC says it will continue to explore whether the new value brought about by digital media will add further value to graffiti art as it has traditionally been.
