Nikkei Research announced the results of its "Tokyo Metropolitan Census" and "Kansai Census" surveys of commercial facility usage conducted this spring. The top rankings for customer attraction, measured by consumer usage rate, were Isetan Shinjuku in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Hankyu Umeda Main Store in the Kansai region.

Isetan Shinjuku, which ranked first in the Tokyo metropolitan area, also led the way in the March 2019 survey, but in the September 2019 survey, it had fallen to third place behind Shibuya Hikarie, which opened in April, and the group's Ginza Mitsukoshi. Following the completion of a major renovation that began last spring on March 6, the occupancy rate rose to 8.5%, up 1.3 points from last fall and 0.8% from last spring. Odakyu Shinjuku, which ranked sixth last time, rose to third place. With the addition of Keio Department Store and Lumine, Shinjuku now accounts for four of the top 10 facilities. Bic Camera, which opened in September 2019 on the former site of the Mitsukoshi Shinjuku store, appears in 29th place. In second place, Hikarie maintained a high utilization rate of 8.0%. Also, Bic Camera Yurakucho Main Building, Lumine Yurakucho Store, and Yodobashi Camera Shinjuku West Exit Main Store, all of which were in the top 10 from a year ago, have disappeared, while Ginza Mitsukoshi and Yodobashi Akiba Building have dropped in rank. In addition to the prolonged slump in television sales among electronics retailers, the Ginza, Yurakucho, and Hibiya area is struggling, having not seen a large commercial facility open since Lumine Yurakucho opened in October 2011. In the Kansai region, the top 10 remains unchanged from last fall, but Hankyu Umeda Main Store, which completed a seven-year renovation in November, took the top spot for the first time. Daimaru Umeda Store, which topped the list in both spring and fall last year, fell to second place, 3.7 points behind Hankyu Umeda Main Store's utilization rate of 21.4%. With the exception of Takashimaya Osaka in Namba, Osaka, and JR Kyoto Isetan, eight of the top ten spots are occupied by commercial facilities in Umeda, Osaka, the same as last year. Grand Front Osaka, which opened on April 26th of this year, is expected to appear in the next ranking. The Metropolitan Census and Kansai Census are online surveys conducted twice a year, in spring and autumn. The Metropolitan version was conducted in March of this year, targeting approximately 15,700 people living in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama, while the Kansai version was conducted in April of the same year, targeting approximately 7,600 people living in Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara, Shiga, and Wakayama, to investigate the actual usage of major commercial facilities in their respective areas. The customer attraction rankings for each facility are calculated by the percentage of people who used the facility in question in the three months immediately prior to the survey. This time, 708 facilities in the Metropolitan area and 206 in Kansai were surveyed.
