Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo kicks off with a "supernova" [2018-19 Fall/Winter Collection]

Mar 20, 2018
Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO 2018 A/W kicked off on March 19th. Over the course of six days, approximately 50 domestic and international brands presented their 2018-19 Fall/Winter collections at venues such as Shibuya Hikarie and Omotesando Hills. Topping the show on the first day of the season was FREIKNOCK, Korea's first participating brand. Designer Yoo Ju-hyun (Yooju) is a former German professional soccer player. K-pop group Supernova member Gunil has been with the brand since its launch, and the front row of the show featured Korean idols such as Supernova members Jihyuk and Kwangsu, T-ARA's Hyomin, and rappers P.O. and Younga. Produced by GQ JAPAN, this Tokyo debut collection was made possible by Gonil's discharge from military service in January, with the magazine's support, as the magazine had previously worked with him on magazine shoots. Regarding this collection, Yuju explained, "I was inspired by a photo book by Israeli photographer Michal Chelbin, who photographs criminals and prisoners in Russia and Ukraine. I wanted to express the duality of truth and lies, and external and internal." While the theme was serious, the collection itself, based on military and workwear, featured classic traditional fabrics, and expressed a street-inspired sensibility through details such as the length and side slits, as well as graphics. Yuju has been a fan of Undercover since childhood and has openly cited designer Jun Takahashi as an influence. The show, along with the brand's theme and concept, reaffirmed Tokyo's place at the heart of the current street fashion scene.

"The appeal of Flynock lies in the creations of a younger generation that don't gravitate towards "mature clothing" in the world of clothing that is so formulaic. We decided to cooperate however small our contributions were with the hope that AFWT could become a platform for the younger generation in Asia who are seeking to change their lifestyles through fashion," commented GQ Editor-in-Chief Suzuki Masafumi.

After the show, supernova fans crowded the foyer to take photos of the Korean idols, creating an exciting atmosphere at "Tokyo Collection" unlike any other before.

Also on the first day, Mame Kurogouchi, winner of the Fashion Prize of Tokyo and who previously presented an installation in Paris, presented a show as the first batter at "AT TOKYO". The Dallas and others also presented their new collections.
