Dries Van Noten: Timeless freedom created from the palm of your hand [Women's Fall/Winter 2018-19]

Mar 7, 2018

Dries Van Noten, the designer behind the documentary film "Dries Van Noten," which has been running in Japan for a long time, held a show in the halls of Paris's City Hall. This season, the key motif was "art brut," or "outsider art," or art created spontaneously by people without art training. The collection featured a rich and varied collection of layered pieces, incorporating this free spirit, the glittery elements of 1970s glam rock, and sportswear details. An item printed with a peacock feather motif, drawn with pen and ink, was coordinated with a Mongolian lamb-style faux fur coat featuring a bias-bias patchwork of marabou feathers. The technique of combining different materials bias-biased was also seen on blousons and dresses, adding movement to each piece.

A feather-print gathered top featuring details found on parkas was coordinated with a 3D jacquard (brocade) skirt, emphasizing the contrast between sporty and traditional. A sporty blouson embroidered with vinyl tape reminiscent of feathers was paired with shiny pants and a checked skirt, showcasing the brand's signature mixture of motifs and colors.

A wide variety of items were presented, weaving together a variety of elements, but the collection was never distracting and was beautifully put together along a single flow.
