Next-generation shoe brand using Japanese culture and market as a foothold to go global [MICAM Italy Report]

Feb 20, 2018
At MICAM 85, a comprehensive shoe trade fair held from February 11th to 14th, a new "Emerging Designer" zone was set up, bringing together 12 promising young brands.

The selection process was handled by shoe designer Ernesto Esposito, art director Marco Braga, and fashion editor Alex Vaccani, who selected the brands based on various aspects such as innovation, marketability, and technology, each of which was based on the idea that each brand is unique.

ADIEU, based in Paris, is the collaboration between Benjamin Caron, who studied handmade shoemaking in France. The brand was founded five years ago by Benjamin Caron and Isabelle Guedon, who has worked for designers such as Alber Elbaz, Guy Laroche, and Yves Saint Laurent. The collaborative model featured here debuted at UNDERCOVER's Fall/Winter 2018-19 men's collection, shown at Pitti Uomo in January of this year. They previously collaborated with Japan's Arts & Science, and were introduced to UNDERCOVER by Sonia Park. "Benjamin and Jun (Takahashi) share the same interests and influences, including music. We're like twins who grew up in the same environment (laughs). That's why we immediately understood each other's work. I was so excited watching the UNDERCOVER show at Pitti Uomo that I got goosebumps," says Isabelle. Based in Paris, the brand currently sources materials primarily in France, but manufactures its products in Portugal. Their iconic model is the creeper shoe, made with natural rubber and featuring a rubber sole. This season's lineup includes new models made from materials other than leather, such as fabric checks and rubber-wrapped sneakers.
