For Fall/Winter 2022, British designer Paul Smith presents a cinematographically inspired campaign that evokes the techniques of surrealist cinema and the work of world-renowned directors, while also marking a return to dressing up.

The campaign is upbeat and nostalgic, referencing Paul Smith ads from the '90s and early 2000s that celebrated the joy of dressing up, evoking the glamour, opulence, and playfulness of old Hollywood. Shot in a secluded country house reminiscent of a film set, this season's campaign tells two distinct stories: those of the actors on set, and those letting loose and letting their antics go when the cameras aren't rolling.

Evoking the techniques used by avant-garde filmmakers, diverse cinematic styles including surrealism, and Paul Smith's signature color palette, the campaign features a vibrant palette inspired by RGB (red, green, blue) color models and cinematography.

Photographer Johnny Dufort's images use blur, flash, and glare to enhance the rich colors, while the shadows of lighting fixtures and stage props are deliberately left to emphasize the themes of the shoot and convey a touch of ironic humor. Trompe l'oeil effects, seen in the Autumn/Winter 2022 collection, are also used in part to create a dreamlike atmosphere.

The styling by Julien Ganio for men and Nel Kalonji for women is unified in monochrome to match the background, highlighting key Paul Smith items this season, such as Paul Smith's signature color tailoring, dynamic prints, statement knitwear and checks.

Key items for men this season include bold red, green and blue suits, stem floral print shirts, starlet print camp collar shirts, signature stripe mock neck sweaters, checked outerwear, solar floral print corduroy pants, shearling parkas and eye-catching zigzag mohair knitwear.

For women, the collection includes a hot pink cashmere corduroy suit, an evening suit with Moonlit Palm Floral, a midi dress with a Solar Floral print, jacquard zigzag trousers and matching jacket, leather and shearling jackets, and a stem floral shirt and trousers.
