© P. StableJean Paul Gaultier's GAULTIER PARIS brand presented its Spring/Summer 2018 couture collection in the brand's headquarters' party room. This season, the brand paid homage to Pierre Cardin, Gaultier's first mentor, and the 95-year-old living legend himself was in attendance. Nicolas Ghesquière, the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's women's line and a former assistant to Gaultier, also made an appearance, creating quite a stir. The collection kicked off with a series centered around black and white, inspired by the 1960s. The designer frequently used a technique of cutting double-face fabric with two different colors on each side and revealing the reverse side to create a contrasting color. The collection's unique use of thin, elongated fabrics, such as a jacket made from knitted fringe, a dress with pleated ribbons sewn all over, and a suit with cord sewn all over, drew attention. A dress with bias-cut details evoked the avant-garde atmosphere of the 1960s, while a dress with a fly agaric print recalled the madness of the psychedelic era. The use of black and white kinetic motifs further enhanced the trippy feel, and a dress with a touch of gold sparkle evoked Africa. Finally, model Coco Rocha, a frequent face of recent fashion, took to the runway with her daughter. As happens every season, the finale was filled with a happy atmosphere.
