MSGM's Cheerful Italian Preppy [Men's Fall/Winter 2018-19]

Jan 23, 2018

MSGM's Fall/Winter 2018-19 men's collection, held at the University of Milan on January 14th, was a youthful offering, typical of designer Massimo Giorgetti's new Milanese style.

A look at the feet of the press seated in the front row revealed a selection of Off-White and Nike collaboration sneakers, the much-anticipated collaboration that launched at the end of the year. MSGM, a Milanese brand known for its ability to elevate luxury street style, has earned a strong following. This season's theme, emblematic of the venue, was Milanese collegiate style. The collection, which skillfully utilized vibrant colors reminiscent of Italian preppy, evoked '80s techno, New Wave, and the Memphis designs featured in Ettore Sottsass's retrospective, "There Is a Planet," currently on display at the Milan Triennale. Simple items with a slight twist on American workwear are tucked into pants, or worn as a waist bag across the body, creating a fun, geeky style.

Pink work jacket suiting with regimental tie, satin shirt with high-rise bleached jeans, Cowichan cardigan jacket with checked pants, nylon hoodie with sweatshirt style, all tastefully finished with box logos and lettering graphics, nod to their current popularity.

The awkwardness of the amateur models, cast by Massimo himself, is realistic, and the collection fits the nonchalant mood of today's Milanese youth who love American casual style.
