Y/PROJECT, led by Glenn Martens, held their Fall/Winter 2018-19 men's collection show at the Palais de la Femme, a building built by the Salvation Army in 1910 to provide relief to women. Continuing their surrealistic garment creations that seemingly reconstructed silhouettes and structures, the brand demonstrated a strong commitment to free-form streetwear creation. The collection featured a variety of bizarre and out-of-place pieces, including a leather jacket and sweatshirt combination, a knitwear and rider jacket mix, a double-breasted denim jacket, and a jacket with enlarged, paneled sleeves. Bottoms also featured excessive volume, including denim pants with a hakama-like silhouette that emphasized vertical lines, pants decorated with fur, and leather pants with double belts. Boots were also oversized and gathered, appearing unnecessarily large. However, the sense of incongruity eventually faded, and the excess transformed into a refreshing feeling, which is quite surprising. This is because Glenn Martins has a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of fashion, yet his expressions are unique, and perhaps it is because his own sense of balance gives a sense of stability within instability.Like Vetements, which achieved success with its unique interpretation of streetwear, it seems that Y/PROJECT is establishing a new genre.
