The pop-up event "Yukata Stylist Made (STYLIST MADE)" featuring yukatas designed by 10 of Japan's leading male stylists will be held at The Stage on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku from the 19th. It will run until June 25th.
The participating stylists are Okubo Atsushi, Okabe Fumihiko, Kumagai Takashi, Sukezane Tomoki, Nagase Tetsuro, Futamura Takeshi, Hasegawa Akio, Baba Keisuke, Yamamoto Koichiro, and Watanabe Yasuhiro (in alphabetical order). Each stylists will be involved in everything from design to styling, proposing new yukatas as men's summer fashion.
The designs are also authentic, incorporating traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques. The collection is focused on materials and functionality, incorporating traditional Japanese techniques such as "chusen," which allows for dyeing using multiple colors at once; "tenassen," a traditional Japanese pattern dyeing method using a dye-containing paste; and "Katakai Momen," a plain weave using three different thicknesses of thread. It also incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as "Theo Alpha," a moisture-wicking, quick-drying polyester material developed by Toray.
All yukatas are ready-made, priced from 39,900 yen to 81,900 yen. Obi sashes and geta sandals styled by each stylist will also be available for purchase.
Isetan Shinjuku opened its first pop-up shop focusing on men's yukata last year, marking its second this year. Kenichiro Asako, a buyer at the Isetan Mitsukoshi Kimono Products Department, who was in charge of the project, said, "Last year, we asked a stylist to style and sell men's yukatas, which was very well received and made us realize the importance of styling. This time, we thought we could propose even more innovative yukatas by having a stylist design them. By proposing yukata as fashion, we hope to attract the interest of younger generations who don't wear kimonos."
After the event ends, the items will continue to be sold at the Kimono section on the 7th floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku.
