Event Date:2017.12.02-2018.01.28

"TOP Collection: Atget's Inspiration, a Passing Spirit," an exhibition exploring the influence and enduring spirit of French photographer Eugène Atget, will be held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum from December 2nd. Eugène Atget, often referred to as the "father of modern photography," captured Paris and its surrounding areas from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Over a 30-year period, beginning at the age of 41, he took over 8,000 photographs of historic buildings, old streetscapes, shopfronts, signs, gardens, and street workers, systematically documenting the "old Paris" that was destined to disappear as modernization progressed. Initially, Atget sold his work as "documentary material" to painters, architects, and public institutions to make a living. However, he was discovered by American photographer Man Ray and his assistant Berenice Abbott, and his work began to garner high praise in his later years and after his death. This exhibition examines the influence Eugène Atget has had on later photographic expression from various angles, drawing on the museum's collection of works and photo books and other sources. By comparing Atget's own work with that of his contemporaries, as well as the outstanding works of photographers active from the 20th century to the present, the exhibition brings to light his influence. There is no end to the photographers who have admired and looked up to Atget as their role model, but what did they discover in his photographs? This exhibition delves into the true identity of this enigmatic photographer, who, while capturing reality as a "recorder of Paris," also expresses a world beyond reality, and continues to have a profound influence on artists worldwide. The exhibition will feature works by various artists who embody Atget's spirit, carefully selected from the museum's diverse collection. The exhibition will bring together approximately 155 works by 12 artists, including Man Ray, Berenice Abbott, Charles Marville, known for his beautiful landscape photography, Alfred Stieglitz, Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, and Masahisa Fukase. There will also be a talk event featuring photography critic Fuminori Yokoe and photography historian Ryuichi Kaneko.
