The exhibition "Art Aquarium Castle ~Kyoto, Dance of the Goldfish~ Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Restoration of Imperial Rule~" will be held from October 25th to December 11th at the World Heritage Site, Former Imperial Palace Nijo Castle in Nijo-jo Town, Kyoto.
This aquarium art exhibition by art aquarium artist Hidetomo Kimura celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016, and the "ECO EDO Nihonbashi Art Aquarium 2017 ~Edo, Coolness of Goldfish~ & Night Aquarium" held again this year in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, has attracted a total of 7.6 million paid visitors to date.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Restoration of Imperial Rule, and this exhibition marks the first time the exhibition has been held at Nijo Castle in Kyoto since 2015. The "Art Aquarium of the Japanese World" will be held in an area of Nijo Castle, one of the sites of the Restoration of Imperial Rule, that is normally closed to the public. The exhibit will feature three of Art Aquarium's signature "Byoburium" sculptures, a spectacular new piece depicting the transitions in Japanese art history from the late Edo period, the early Meiji period, and modern culture that began with the restoration of imperial rule. It will also feature Art Aquarium's largest work, "Super Oiran," a "Kirikorium" piece using Edo Kiriko glass, and "Kutani Goldfish Appraisal," crafted from the traditional Kutani ware, making its Western Japan debut. Additionally, visitors will be able to see large-scale new works that can only be seen in outdoor exhibits. Additionally, from November 1st to December 11th, visitors can enjoy a special performance of "The Goldfish Dance" featuring Kojo Rantaro, the star of the Kojo Theater Company, on the special "Water Play Stage," which recreates the vibrant cultural world of the ancient capital of Kyoto. Additionally, from October 25th to 31st, there will be a special performance called "Dance of Geiko and Maiko," where you can see Kyomai, a style of Japanese dance.
In addition, the venue will also have a "Night Festival BAR and Tea Ceremony" where you can enjoy the performances in an outdoor space while sipping on local Kyoto sake, matcha green tea, and a set of Kyoto sweets from a long-established shop.
