The Sumida Hokusai Museum, designed by architect Kazuyo Sejima, is hosting a special exhibition featuring works by Katsushika Hokusai and Kazuyo Sejima, titled "Kazuyo Sejima SANAA x Hokusai," from October 31st to November 12th.
Katsushika Hokusai, who always pursued cutting-edge painting techniques while continuing to portray people with a certain warmth, and Kazuyo Sejima, who created designs that were cool and stylish yet connected people and cities. The exhibition features models and drawings of the museum, as well as models and photographs of ongoing projects by Kazuyo Sejima's architectural unit, SANAA, and replicas of Hokusai Manga, allowing visitors to experience these two groundbreaking figures who have captivated people both in the Edo period and today.
The Sumida Hokusai Museum not only exhibits the precious works of Katsushika Hokusai, but also boasts Kazuyo Sejima's futuristic architecture. The world-famous Hokusai, who was born here and spent most of his life in Sumida Ward, is a soft part of the town's identity, carrying on its traditions. The museum building itself, which stands out while blending in with the surrounding area, also contributes to the town's hard, new identity. The Sumida Hokusai Museum, which combines these elements, will create a community that connects local people, and the culture that this community creates will likely change the future.
