"The Tree of Life" is the concept behind Ukrainian artist Alesia Trofimenko's artwork and was the starting point for Maria Grazia Chiuri's Dior Fall/Winter 2022-2023 Haute Couture collection.

This symbol from a wide range of cultures and myths is brought to life through paintings and embroidery. Like the tree that supports the sky and connects it to the earth through its branches and roots, the tree of life bridges all forms of creation.

Alessia Trofimenko's work follows stylistic codes shared between different lands. Maria Grazia Chiuri views fashion through the filter of art, exploring this traditional realm that is both enduring and revolutionary, like couture. The collection is comprised of a series of pieces that draw inspiration from all cultures in an open dialogue and resonate with the imagination of various ethnic customs.

The branches, trunk and roots of the Tree of Life. This vision is freely translated onto the garments through an abundance of exquisite embroidery in cotton, silk and twisted threads. Tones of beige are accented with touches of black and blue. Crafted over time to achieve the utmost excellence, the embroideries are applied to cotton fabrics, wool crepe, silk and cashmere.

Bronze and black lace and guipure braided patchworks adorn dresses. Silk chiffon is smocked for long, airy, figure-hugging dresses. These materials reinterpret the New Look silhouette. The Bar jacket is exquisitely crafted with vertically smocked fabric, while the skirt is constructed with Basque ribbon. Handwoven fabrics create a refined and unique texture on unhemmed garments. Meanwhile, wide trench coats in silk and cotton with embroidery are paired with long dresses.

In a space that mirrors the studio, producing materials and forms is a reminder of the reality of our world and what it means to be human today. Gestures passed down, learned and perfected are repeated. The Tree of Life focuses on tradition and gesture, a call and a warning to restore balance, even if only for a moment.
