21_21 DESIGN SIGHT to host "Wildness: Untamed Senses and Thoughts" exhibition, unraveling the "wildness" of humans

Oct 11, 2017

From October 20th, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, a design facility within Tokyo Midtown, will be hosting a special exhibition titled "Wildness: Untamed Senses and Thoughts," directed by philosopher and anthropologist Shinichi Nakazawa.

This exhibition focuses on the "wild" abilities that underpin human culture, life, and the psyche. In today's world, where everyone lives in the same world and has the same experiences, "wildness" is defined as the realm of the mind that has yet to be fully controlled, or tamed. By engaging with the "fascination with wildness" of contemporary artists, the exhibition will explore how we can "discover the wildness" that lies within us through a variety of works and materials. Participating artists include Mika Aoki, Tsuguya Inoue, Katsumi Omori, Stephanie Quayle, Seitaro Kuroda, Kotobuki Shiriagari, Yasuhiro Suzuki, Fumiho Tachibana, and Yusuke Nishimura, all of whom are active both in Japan and abroad. The "wildness" of human nature, both instinct and intellect, can be a powerful catalyst for our creativity. Shinichi Nakazawa, who studied Buddhism in Tibet and conducts research on human thought across time and disciplines, says, "Without access to this 'wild realm,' new discoveries and creations are impossible in any field." What does "wildness" mean in today's world, where reason and rationality are highly valued? How can we access the "wild realm" within our hearts? How can we open a pathway to it? This exhibition's unique and diverse works will answer these questions and help us become aware of the "wildness" that lies within us.
