Event Date:2017.10.18-12.26
Oct 11, 2017

An exhibition featuring the works of applique artist Miyawaki Ayako, "Miyawaki Ayako: Beautiful Applique - Dressing Up Everyday Life with Fabric," will be held at the Kobe Fashion Museum from October 18th to December 26th.

Born in Tokyo in 1905, Miyawaki Ayako has been creating poetic applique works using familiar fish, vegetables, and flowers as models since the end of the war at the age of 40. Making use of antique fabric, she has produced works that exude the three-dimensionality of a still image, exude humor and warmth, and are full of timeless design and dynamism. The exhibition will feature approximately 220 of Miyawaki's representative works, spanning her early to later years, as well as special exhibits, with themes of "beauty of the everyday," "love for nature," and "love for people and family." Additionally, the exhibition will feature Miyawaki's favorite items, which offer insight into her personality, and a portrait of Miyawaki by her husband, Western-style painter Haru. Additionally, the exhibition will feature "Gallery Talks" by museum curators on October 21, November 12, and December 9 (admission fee required; no registration necessary), "Backyard Tours (Museum Exploration Edition)" on October 28, November 11, and December 23 (free participation; registration required), and a lecture titled "Handicrafts Born in the Postwar Era: Examining Miyawaki Ayako's Works from the Perspective of Modern Handicraft History" on November 26 (free participation; registration required).
