Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons explores botanical spirit and free form [Women's Spring/Summer 2018]

Oct 11, 2017

Junya Watanabe's JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS held its Spring/Summer 2018 collection show in the hall of the Paris Medical University. The brand's concept is to incorporate the mysterious and intriguing shapes found in nature into its clothing. This season, the designer showcased his masterful cutting techniques, creating unique volumes and complex shapes. Many pieces featured Marimekko interior fabrics. Graphic monochrome motifs, in particular, perfectly complemented the sculptural forms of the pieces, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship of dresses with cylindrical spaces and circular ornaments. While the punkish hairstyles evoked an edgy image, pieces crafted with botanical-motif fabrics gently balanced the overall atmosphere, creating a sense of comfort through the coexistence of opposing elements.

The camouflage motif items are made from original fabrics, which are bonded to create a unique tension and a sculptural form. It's fascinating how the preconceived notion of camouflage as a combat uniform fabric fades away and the image comes across as something graphically and connected to nature.
