Rei Kawakubo's COMME des GARÇONS presented its Spring/Summer 2018 collection at the Russian Embassy in Paris's 16th arrondissement. The theme was "Multidimensional Graffiti." The collection was based on the concept of combining the work of other artists to create a three-dimensional graffiti effect. The images used included works by artists such as Renaissance painter Arcimboldo, manga artist and illustrator Makoto Takahashi, and Sengoku-period ink painter Sesson. Rather than featuring these works, Kawakubo treated them as a single material, cutting them up and combining them with polka dots, floral print fabrics, and layers of torn fabric. The resulting collection created a unique sense of volume and dimension, resulting in a textured graffiti effect. Furthermore, decorations made from small plastic toys added a naive element, creating a mysteriously dark worldview.
It's a fresh shock when an image you've seen casually appears in a shape you never imagined, and this collection made clever use of this, perhaps even calling it the magic of Comme des Garçons.
