ISSEY MIYAKE, designed by Yoshiyuki Miyamae, held its Spring/Summer 2018 collection show in the halls of the Grand Palais in Paris's 8th arrondissement. The collection, titled "A Piece of Memory," was inspired by the rugged cracks in the earth, moss-covered lava, and crystal-clear glaciers he witnessed during a trip to Iceland.
The show opened with dancers wearing printed "Steam Stretch" dresses, showcasing the material's ability to stretch and contract to fit the body. Occasionally, the unprinted base fabric's color would emerge from behind the folds, revealing a unique texture.
This season, "Baked Stretch" was created by printing a special glue and then expanding it at high temperature, creating a pattern that revealed Icelandic landscapes between the distorted pleats. The contracted parts created a three-dimensional, graphic effect, also leaving a fresh impression. "CUBE," made by pasting different materials together in a grid pattern, has a unique tension and movement, creating a futuristic image. Also appearing was a checked fabric woven with brown thread dyed using the traditional Amami Oshima mud dyeing technique, which, unlike the other materials, had a more natural feel to it.
