Y's and Mackintosh have teamed up to create a coat collection called "Y's 1972 - Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH." Two unisex coat styles will be released on Wednesday, July 13th.


A unique style—Y's, Yohji Yamamoto's first brand established in 1972, embodies his approach to clothing design. Always moving forward, the brand expresses its identity through its unchanging philosophy. In 2022, Y's will look back on its 50-year history through creative endeavors and strive for further innovation. Part of this capsule collection is a collaboration between Y's and MACKINTOSH. This innovative and functional fabric originates from the invention of Mackintosh Cloth, a rubberized waterproof fabric, by Charles Mackintosh in 1823. Mackintosh continues to evolve nearly 200 years after its creation. The coat from "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH," part of the "Y's 1972" series, features RAINTEC CLASSIC, a functional material developed by Mackintosh. RAINTEC CLASSIC is a functional material made by bonding two layers of cotton fabric with a breathable waterproof film instead of rubber. It's a new staple for Mackintosh that is not only waterproof, but also water-repellent and breathable. Lighter and less stiff than traditional rubberized fabrics, RAINTEC CLASSIC allows for ample fabric to be used, while still maintaining the lightness and flexibility of Y's signature patterning. This new staple material allows for the creation of a coat with a unique, voluminous shape characteristic of Y's, crafted with Mackintosh craftsmanship, resulting in innovative and free-form designs. Y's has reimagined the established style of the "Mackintosh coat," expanding its sculptural possibilities.


A hybrid of function and craftsmanship, Y's CRAFTED BY Mackintosh coats incorporate the handmade lining techniques used in traditional rubberized coats. Every seam is lined with waterproof tape by hand, a traditional waterproofing method unchanged since the birth of rubberized coats in the early 19th century.


To apply the tape, a craftsman applies a special adhesive to his finger, stretches it, applies the tape, rolls it over, and lets it dry—a process repeated over and over. Because every coat goes through this process, production is limited.


Y's sought to connect this manual process to sculptural expression. While a dark lining is typically used to obscure the presence of tape, Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH coats also feature a white lining, with the obvious taped areas and rubber patches serving as design elements. "Inside out" - both styles are reversible, allowing you to enjoy the colors of each side. Y's commitment to unique form and reconfiguration, combined with MACKINTOSH's unwavering innovation and craftsmanship, result in creative Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH coats. Limited edition - a limited number of coats are finished at MACKINTOSH's Scottish factory. Each Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH coat is hand-numbered to mark its completion.
