[Ask 10 Stylists] Futamura Takeshi: Enjoy casual YUKATA at the beach in Hawaii

Jun 15, 2013

Isetan Shinjuku will host a pop-up event called "Yukata Stylist Made" at The Stage on the 1st floor of the main building from June 19th to 25th, featuring yukata designs by 10 of Japan's top stylists. (After the event, the designs will be available at the Kimono section on the 7th floor of the main building.) Fashion Headline will be conducting interviews with 10 stylists in a relay format. This time, we're featuring stylist Tsuyoshi Futamura. Based on the theme of "yukatas you can wear to Hawaii," he designed a casual yukata using a black base, vibrant plant patterns, and wrinkled fabric. He proposes a yukata that will make you want to choose your next outfit. --What Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques did you incorporate in this collection? And why did you choose those techniques? The image for this collection was a vintage curtain pattern made in Hawaii in the 1940s, so we used a silkscreen print.
--What is the difference between your main job of styling and designing clothes (in this case, yukata)?
Completely different. For design, we have professional designers.
--Please tell us about any difficulties you faced when actually making yukata, or any new discoveries you made.
Yukatas are casual, but how can you make the traditional elements feel a little more casual without being too eccentric?
--What traditional Japanese techniques would you like to incorporate into your styling and designs in the future?
Wabi-sabi.
--Who do you think is the coolest man in a yukata?
Eikichi Yazawa. I've actually styled a yukata, and it was amazing.
--Which designer, both Japanese and international, would you like to have design a yukata for you?
To be honest, I think yukatas look better if they aren't "designed" too much.

--What is the most memorable memory of going out in a yukata? Also, what are some recommended situations or spots?

A local festival.
