Isetan Shinjuku will host a pop-up event called "Yukata Stylist Made" at The Stage on the first floor of the main building from June 19th to 25th, featuring yukata designs by 10 of Japan's top stylists. (After the event, the designs will be available at the Kimono section on the seventh floor of the main building.) Fashion Headline interviewed 10 stylists in a relay format. This time, we interviewed Takashi Kumagai. The theme was "JAPAMISH." Inspired by Amish weaving in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, Kumagai offers a new style of yukata, incorporating frayed fabrics here and there for a craftsmanlike feel. --What Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques did you incorporate? And why did you choose them? This time, I only shared my vision and left the technical details up to the craftsmen. --What is the difference between your main job as a stylist and designing clothing (in this case, yukata)?
There is absolutely no difference.
--Please tell us about any difficulties you faced when actually making a yukata, or any new discoveries you made.
It was the first time I thought, "I want to wear one."
--What traditional Japanese techniques would you like to incorporate into your styling and designs in the future?
I guess it would be the color of the dye.
--Who do you think is the coolest man who suits a yukata?
Musashimaru.
--Which Japanese or international designer would you like to have design a yukata for?
Martin Margiela.
--What is the most memorable memory of going out in a yukata? Also, what are some situations or spots you would recommend?
I have not yet gone out in a yukata.
