From October 7th to December 17th, Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo, will be hosting the first Japanese retrospective of Swiss-German painter Otto Nebel, "Otto Nebel: The Age of Chagall, Kandinsky, and Klee."
Otto Nebel (1892-1973) was a multi-talented artist who worked in Switzerland and Germany as a painter, printmaker, and poet. In cooperation with the Otto Nebel Foundation in Bern, this exhibition traces the trajectory of Nebel's creative career from his early years to his later years, focusing on his major themes, including architecture, theater, music, abstract art, and the Near East. The exhibition also features works by Nebel's contemporaries, including Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, with whom he met at the Bauhaus during his 1924 stay in Weimar and developed long-standing friendships, as well as Marc Chagall, who influenced Nebel. This opportunity to witness Nebel's process of experimentally incorporating various styles as he established his own unique style is a wonderful opportunity. Additionally, pianist Masaki Hayashi will host a salon concert to commemorate the exhibition, "Resonating Colors and Forms" (capacity 60 people, ¥2,500) on November 5th (price 2,500 yen), and a related lecture by Misawa Bauhaus Collection curator Yoshiho Somada on November 19th (capacity 60 people, reservations required). This exhibition is also scheduled to travel to the Museum of Kyoto from April 28, 2018 (until June 24).
