Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of art bookshop NADiff. This week's featured book is "Halo," the latest photo book by Kawauchi Rinko, who has received high praise both in Japan and abroad and enjoys many fans. It's introduced by NADiff Apartment, the flagship store in Ebisu, Tokyo (1F NADiff a/p/a/r/t, 1-18-4 Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

■ "Halo" by Kawauchi Rinko
Kawauchi Rinko won the Kimura Ihei Photography Award for her debut works "Utatane" and "Hanabi." She is one of Japan's leading photographers, having held numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. This is Kawauchi Rinko's long-awaited new photo book, her first in four years since the publication of "Ametsuchi" in 2013. The title "Halo" not only refers to a halo or halos, but also to the region of globular clusters of stars that surround the Milky Way. The photographs capture a series of mystical images, including countless migratory birds soaring across the winter sky, a Shinto ritual held in the tenth month of the lunar calendar in the Izumo region, and the "Dashuhua" festival, a tradition that has been held for over 300 years in a village in China's Hebei Province. This new work explores the veiled essence of the world, exploring the beautiful yet fleeting particles of light that sparkle for a moment before disappearing, the energy emitted by life, and the potential relationship between nature and humanity. The design is by graphic designer Hans Gremann, who also worked on her previous work, "Ametsuchi." The sparkling silver foil scattered across the jet-black cover is reminiscent of the fireworks made from molten scrap iron at the Chinese "Shuhua" festival, which is featured in this book. The hardcover body is wrapped in a sleeve case, making this a book with a rigid, black-based design that is also attractive.
