HOSOO RESIDENCE, a lodging facility created by textile brand HOSOO, opened in Kyoto's Karasuma Oike district in July.
The location is at the back of an alley in the quiet Gosho Minami area of Kyoto's old town. It's conveniently located about a 15-minute drive from JR Kyoto Station and a 4-minute walk from Marutamachi Station on the subway. The building is a fully renovated pre-war Kyoto townhouse. While the exterior retains the traditional townhouse design, the interior features Nishijin textiles and earthen walls crafted with plastering techniques dating back to the Asuka period, creating a contemporary and luxurious piece of craft architecture.
The beautiful shadows reminiscent of the world of Junichiro Tanizaki's masterpiece "In Praise of Shadows," the space gently embraces guests and is decorated with special interior design and products created specifically for the facility. The impressive earthen walls, crafted using traditional plastering techniques and rammed earth, are made using three different types of soil, mainly from Kyoto, and capture the natural colors of the land, which have been shaped over hundreds of years. The spacious bedroom features a bed from Iwata, a luxury Kyoto bedding manufacturer founded in 1830, and Nishijin-ori fabric from Hosoo. The one-of-a-kind speakers, created in collaboration with Technics, feature a special surface featuring Hosoo textiles.
The bathroom, featuring a custom-made black stone bathtub made with black plaster and polished plastering techniques, overlooks the garden, which is paved with white gravel. The white gravel, which spreads throughout the minimalist space, diffuses light like a reflector, allowing visitors to sense the passage of time through the changing light. The art piece within the facility is a Nishijin-ori weaving of a photograph of the earthen walls before the renovation, which has been re-draped on the restored walls to express the "memory of the earthen walls." The dramatic atmosphere created by the earthen walls with their various colors and textures, and the Nishijin textiles that gently diffuse the light, is sure to give you a real sense of the value of craftsmanship that has been cultivated over the years and by the hands of many people.
Why not experience Japan's ancient aesthetic sense at this premium inn, which accepts only one group per day and where you can feel the tradition and beauty of Kyoto, its historic craftsmanship, and the warmth of its people?
