The exhibition "Japan Folk Crafts Museum 80th Anniversary: Folk Crafts Japan - A Journey Through Handcrafted Japan with Yanagi Soetsu" opened on August 30th in the 8th floor hall of Nihonbashi Takashimaya and runs until September 11th. Founded as part of the folk craft movement advocated by the late Taisho-era thinker Yanagi Soetsu, the Japan Folk Crafts Museum celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2016. Since its founding, the museum has been collecting, preserving, and exhibiting exceptional folk crafts. This exhibition focuses on the golden age of folk crafts from the late Edo period to the Showa period (around the 1950s), when it maintained its vitality. Approximately 170 pieces are on display, primarily from the museum's own collection, including folk crafts collected by Yanagi from all over Japan, as well as pieces from other folk craft museums across Japan. The exhibition is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 is "About Yanagi Soetsu," which displays Yanagi's collection and works by artists with close ties to the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. Chapter 2 is "A Journey Through Handcrafted Japan," which displays the work "Japan Folk Crafts Map (Now Japan Folk Crafts)," created by dyeing artist Serizawa Keisuke at the request of Yanagi Soetsu, for the first time in a venue other than the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. Chapter 3 is "The Essence of Mingei Beauty," which brings together excellent works from the collections of seven folk craft museums around the country, centered around the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy the charm of various crafts from the Edo period.
