John Dove & Molly White's first solo exhibition in Japan, "SENSIBILITY AND WONDER," will be held at the DIESEL ART GALLERY in Shibuya, Tokyo, from August 25th to November 9th.
John Dove & Molly White is an art duo formed in London, England in 1964 by John Dove and textile designer Molly White. They are also known for having had a huge influence on Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, who are said to be proponents of the punk movement that took off in the 1970s. The full-graphic print T-shirts and jackets that John Dove and Molly White produced under the name "WONDER WORKSHOP" were worn by iconic 1970s musicians such as Iggy Pop, Sid Vicious, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, and David Bowie, and many of these pieces are now exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
This exhibition looks back on the period in which the two artists lived, the musicians and artists they contemporaneously lived, and the events of that time. It also traces the methods and sources of ideas for contemporary art and fashion that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s through screenprints, collages, and video. The exhibition explores the origins of street fashion and punk, examining the shared sensibility, rebellious spirit, and humor that underlie the work of these two artists, who remain active in their 70s.
In addition to selling the exhibited works and related products at the venue, a signing session is also scheduled to be held from 4pm to 6pm on August 26th during the exhibition period.
