Araki's exhibition "Nobuyoshi Araki: Photo-Mad Old Man A" is currently being held at Tokyo Opera City, featuring approximately 1,000 pieces, including new works.

Jul 22, 2017

The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is currently hosting an exhibition of photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's work, "Nobuyoshi Araki: Photo-Mad Old Man A," until September 3rd.

At 77 years old, Nobuyoshi Araki is still actively working. On display are over 1,000 pieces of work, including new works shot specifically for this exhibition and scrapbooks created in the 1960s. The exhibition will feature nine sections: "Daikoga," a series capturing married women of various ages; "One Hundred Views of the Sky," a series of 100 monochrome prints taken from the balcony of Araki's home; "One Hundred Views of Flowers," a series inspired by Edo-period painter Ito Jakuchu's "One Hundred Flowers," capturing only flowers; "The Diary of a Photo-Mad Old Man, July 7, 2017," the latest installment in Araki's lifework "Diary" series; "The Greengrocer's Man," an early work that will be shown for the first time; "Polanography," a series of Polaroid exhibitions and archive footage of the works exhibited since 2002; "Non-Diary," a digital series that began in 2014; "Women in the Amusement Park," photographing ordinary women in kimono who seem to have emerged from the world of ukiyo-e; and "Earnest," a series of collages that Araki has been experimenting with since his early days. These nine sections will offer a glimpse into Araki's ongoing work, which focuses on the central theme of "life and death," and his views on life and death.

In addition, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on August 12th, there will be a talk entitled "Considering Photo-Mad Old Man A" between Meiji University professor Kuraishi Nobuno and the exhibition's guest curator Kitazawa Hiromi.
