BEAMS is hosting an event promoting the appeal of traditional industries in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, called "The Scent of Tradition in Everyday Life," at BEAMS JAPAN in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from August 19th to September 8th.
The event is organized by the Takaoka Traditional Industries Youth Association, an organization of young artisans from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, who are involved in traditional crafts such as copperware, lacquerware, and mother-of-pearl inlay. The Takaoka Traditional Industries Youth Association, commonly known as Densan, began 400 years ago when seven metalworkers were sent to the Kaga Domain by order of Maeda Toshinaga. Seeking to pass on the techniques and spirit of these young artisans to the present and future, the young artisans are engaged in a wide range of activities, from casting experiences and exhibitions across the country to the production of a film set in Takaoka's industries, and are advocating new approaches to traditional crafts.
During the event, crafts made in Takaoka will be on sale, and on August 19th and 20th there will be a workshop where you can experience the techniques of a craftsman, the "Tin Sake Cup Making Experience" (participation fee: 3,000 yen/approximately 50 minutes). Reservations for the workshop can be made at the store.
