The third issue of the critical magazine "vanitas" examines fashion and digital

Jul 10, 2014

The third issue (1,800 yen) of fashion critical magazine Vanitas (formerly Fashionista), edited by Mizuno Daijiro and Ashida Hiroshi, has been released.

Continuing from the previous issue, a variety of experts, designers, and researchers appear. The issue includes interviews with fashion researcher Caroline Evans, design unit Proef, and NAiyMA founder Yanagida Tsuyoshi, as well as essays by lawyer Mizuno Yu and fashion researcher Hirayoshi Yuko, and critical essays by nukeme, who creates items using glitch embroidery, and blogger Koso. The research institution introduction section features the University of the Arts London.

This time, there seems to be a lot of criticism about the digital progress of fashion, including a roundtable discussion on algorithmic design, the potential of fashion as open source, and an essay on Iris Van Herpen, winner of the 2014 ANDAM Grand Prix. Perhaps this is because each of the presenters feels a sense of unease about stagnating fashion creation amid technological advances. Perhaps they also hope that technology will usher in new fashion.

The book will be available nationwide, starting in Osaka, at Standard Bookstore Shinsaibashi and Chayamachi in Osaka, Ryuryudo, Daikanyama T-Site and Junkudo Ikebukuro Main Store and Kichijoji Store in Tokyo, and fro・nowhere in Nagoya.
