Shirts made in India by Japanese designers debut at Pitti Uomo in Italy

Jul 9, 2014

PERIOD FEATURES, a shirt brand designed by Japanese creative director Tsumura Masakatsu, was selected for the New Designer Project at Pitti Immagine Uomo, held in June, and presented its first collection. Tsumura, who has been involved in the interior design industry for many years, was captivated by the handwoven textiles of West Bengal that he encountered during a trip to India, and began prototyping shirts three years ago, making repeated trips there. The fabric, known as Jhandani, is entirely made in India, from sewing to production, except for a small amount of color-fast yarn imported from Japan. The delicate weave earned the brand the tag "I'm delicate." The collection of 30 pieces, made from cotton and silk, has a delicate texture reminiscent of the ro and gauze used in kimonos, but the designs are strong enough to compete in the Italian market, which is known for its discerning shirt enthusiasts. Tsumura said that for their debut, they had targeted "Pitti Uomo as their first launch." All samples were ready the day before the opening. They have yet to decide whether to launch in Japan, and this is just the start of their business. This marks the second time the brand has been selected for "The Latest Fashion Buzz." At the Fall/Winter 2014-2015 exhibition in January of this year, Kenneth Field, designed by Japanese designer Kenichi Kusano, was selected to exhibit. In collaboration with L'Uomo Vogue and GQ Italia, Pitti Uomo selects brands from around the world as "promising international talent with a promising future," a project similar to "Who is On Next" and "Super Talents." The booth was set up in a special location within the Pitti venue, and the theme was "the duality of new formality and edgy informality," with the aim of "bringing young talent to the international stage."

In addition to Period Features, 10 brands exhibited this time, including Kristian Guerra, Mr Smart, and Orange Culture.
