Mitsui Fudosan broke ground on July 17th on the "(tentative name) Expoland Site Complex Development Project" in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture. The complex is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. The goal is to create a new landmark for Osaka, combining entertainment and shopping. With a total floor area of approximately 223,000 square meters and retail space of approximately 88,000 square meters, the complex will house approximately 300 entertainment facilities and stores. In addition to serving as a hub for the local community, the complex will also aim to attract visitors from the entire Kansai region, as well as domestic and international tourists. The entertainment zone will feature a new type of aquarium developed by the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the world's largest aquariums in Tempozan, Osaka. The complex will also feature Japan's largest Ferris wheel, a facility where visitors can learn English while having fun, Japan's first "edutainment" facility themed around popular characters, a film facility where visitors can experience nature with all five senses, and a cinema complex with a super-large screen.
The shopping zone will feature many stores opening for the first time in Japan and the Kansai region, selling fashion, miscellaneous goods, and gourmet food from around the world and local cuisine, and aims to be a time-spending facility that people of all ages can enjoy all day long.
After hosting Asia's first World Expo in 1970, the facility has become popular as an amusement park. Located in front of the Osaka Monorail's "Expo Commemoration Park" station, it is in an easily accessible location close to major roads such as the Chugoku Expressway's "Chugoku Suita IC" and Osaka Prefectural Route 2 Osaka Central Circular Route.
