Yoko Ono's GLOBE PEACE. The prayer of a couple who changed the world [Love and Art in Winter/Omotesando Edition]

Dec 17, 2014

To know the other person is to know yourself. Love is always like an adventure. GALLERY 360° is a hidden gem in the heart of bustling Omotesando. As we climbed the stairs, colorful pencils, crayons, and globes awaited us. Yoko Ono's exhibition, "GLOBE PEACE," is an interactive art installation in which visitors can color and draw on various globes. As they color and draw, they talk about the worlds they've experienced before they met, the worlds they've seen, the worlds they've experienced together, and the worlds they imagine for the future. "I have friends in Canada and Africa, and I'd like to go to Argentina. It was once a single continent. I wonder how the earth split apart." It's romantic to escape from our everyday lives, where we only talk about things around us, and to transcend time and space and gaze upon the entire Earth together. Listening to his vision of the Earth, I suddenly feel the miracle of living in the same place and being together in this small gallery. GALLERY 360° is not particularly large, but since its opening in 1982, it has continued to exhibit conceptual art and Fluxus, and in 1996 hosted a solo exhibition of Yoko Ono. Since the Yokohama Triennale in 2001, Yoko Ono's solo exhibitions have been held almost every December. After using a globe to depict each other's past and future, I glanced down at a table in the gallery and found a collection of works titled "COUPLE EVENT." Opening it, I found a simple mission for couples, a nine-week weekend program. Even the world's most famous couple, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, had their share of crises. After their anti-war activism in the 1970s, they faced pressure from society and various organizations, as well as political despair, leading to Yoko's temporary separation in New York and John's in Los Angeles. Society and the times have invaded the partnerships of great couples. Apparently, there were many such couples in the 1970s. In response, artist Yoko created "COUPLE EVENT" as a way to communicate with John and re-examine her relationship with him. It's an interaction that evokes a sense of resolve, one that fully embraces the other. The couple's desire to change the world at the risk of their lives has become the desire of Yoko, the world's most famous Japanese woman, and is carried on in GLOBE PEACE. Leaving the gallery, we were greeted by the glittering winter illuminations of Omotesando. As we walked beneath the countless lights lining the trees, we discussed the world of love and peace to which John and Yoko dedicated their lives, and the meaning behind Yoko's ongoing struggle.
