An exhibition of Hollywood musical posters from the 1950s and 1960s. First public display of Makoto Wada's private collection.

Dec 17, 2014

The National Film Center, Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, will host the second installment of its "Film History Through Posters" series, "The World of Musical Films." The exhibition runs from January 6 to March 29, 2015. This exhibition will feature 32 posters from illustrator Makoto Wada's collection, making its first public appearance. The exhibition also includes works from the collection of Yasuhiko Oyama, one of Japan's leading collectors of musical posters, bringing the total to 54 works. Visuals from iconic musical films, including "Singin' in the Rain," "West Side Story," "My Fair Lady," and "The Sound of Music," are all gathered together. Hollywood's musical films, which launched the world to great actors like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, have produced numerous masterpieces since the 1960s. The posters, which originated on Broadway, express this worldview with vibrant graphics, showcasing the splendid dance and exquisite melodies. The exhibition guide also provides an introduction to each film, making it a great opportunity to look back on the history of film from the 1950s to the 1960s.
