The world's oldest pharmacy unveils fragrance celebrating the 50th anniversary of Florence and Kyoto's sister city relationship

Sep 16, 2015

Santa Maria Novella, the herbal body care brand known as the "world's oldest pharmacy," will release "Eau de Cologne Cinquanta" (100ml, ¥21,600 tax included) on November 1st to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Florence and Kyoto. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the sister city partnership between Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto, and Florence, a city steeped in Renaissance culture, which began in September 1965. A 50th anniversary ceremony was held in Florence in July, including the signing of a letter of reaffirmation to further deepen the friendship between the two cities. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the packaging for this fragrance features a landscape painting by Teppei Sasakura, an artist active both in Japan and abroad. The painting depicts the cityscape of the ancient city as seen from Shorai Garden and the historic landscape of Florence, with its impressive dome of the cathedral. The fragrance begins with top notes of gardenia, orange flower, and tiare, leading to a noble base note of musk and amber.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, a solo exhibition of Sasakura Teppei, who designed the fragrance's packaging, was held in February at Kita Shoin in Kodaiji Temple, Kyoto, and in June at the Santa Maria Novella Gallery in Florence. This fall, a traveling exhibition recreating these two solo exhibitions, featuring the original artwork for the fragrance's packaging, is scheduled to take place across Japan.
