Light festival "Smart Illumination Yokohama" to feature projection mapping, tea ceremonies, and more

Sep 30, 2015

"Smart Illumination Yokohama 2015," an international art event attempting to create a new nightscape, will be held again this year from October 30th to November 3rd in the Yokohama waterfront, centered around Zou-no-hana Park.
The art event will consist of an "Art Program," in which artists utilize cutting-edge environmental technologies to create "another Yokohama nightscape," a "City Exhibition," in which companies showcase environmental technologies such as LEDs, OLEDs, power generation, and energy storage, and a "Collaboration Program," in which companies, organizations, facilities, and shopping districts participate.
This year, the fifth annual event will feature the latest work from "Moving Projection Theater: Building Play" by artist Kyota Takahashi, winner of the DSA Japan Design Space Award 2015. In this project, the face of the iconic figure, affectionately known as "Queen," is projected onto the tower of Yokohama Customs House, a historic building representing Yokohama. With a voice and facial expression, the Queen will speak to visitors about the history of Yokohama that she has witnessed. Other exhibits include "Rainbow House," featuring illuminated balloons by Yokohama-based artist Asae Soya, and "A Certain Seaside," a piece by Yuki Anai and Kentaro Tezuka, winners of the Smart Illumination Award 2014, that expresses memories of the sea that once existed in this area. The "Fruits of Light" project, featuring 250 children attending the Peace child development support center, will also be taking place. This project, conceived by Kyota Takahashi, involves placing small LED bulbs inside numerous fruit bags with smiling faces painted on them. The fruit bags emit small lights, creating a fantastic night view. Other elaborate events include a "Zero Emission Tea Ceremony," where participants can enjoy tea while taking in the harbor view from a tea room set up inside a Nissan e-NV200 electric vehicle parked on the Elephant's Nose breakwater, powered entirely by electricity.
