Y's releases the "Y's 1972" collection, a look back at 50 years of history through creative expression

Release Date:2022.04.06
Apr 3, 2022

A unique style that blends in naturally—Y's, the first brand created by Yohji Yamamoto in 1972, embodies Yamamoto's thoughts and philosophy on clothing creation. Always moving forward, the brand expresses its identity with an unchanging philosophy at its core.

In 2022, Y's will look back on its 50-year history through creative endeavors and attempt further creation. The first collection to be released is the "Y's 1972" collection. Crafted from Y's signature wool gabardine and cotton broadcloth, the collection features classic Y's silhouettes, inspired by men's clothing. Expressing the brand's inner punk, each silhouette features a striking "Y's 1972" tag stitched in a chaotic fashion. The tag is sometimes printed to look like it's been stamped. Inspired by the red tag from the Y's for men Fall/Winter 2003-2004 collection, it has been updated to symbolize and verify this capsule collection.

Y's for men AW 2003-2004 Collection
A broadcloth shirt, a jacket, and black pants layered together. This is the origin of Y's, created by the current atelier team. The accumulation of years of craftsmanship gives the collection a strong and unique character. The "Y's 1972" collection will be available for pre-sale from Wednesday, April 6th at a limited-time store opening at Isetan Shinjuku, and will also be available for purchase at Y's Omotesando and other limited-time stores.

Y's 1972 COTTON BROAD
Shirts made from Y's signature cotton broadcloth. Simple silhouettes feature the "Y's 1972" tag, including a long, no-collar shirt, an oversized shirt with an authentic collar and an impressive back tail and drape that can be worn on its own, and a simple, double-button workwear-like shirt.

Y's 1972 BLACK GABARDINE
Jackets, shirt jackets, pants, and dresses made from Y's signature wool gabardine fabric. The "Y's 1972" tag is attached to the chest, hem, or side. Work coat-like jackets and styles that can be worn by men are composed of silhouettes reminiscent of the origins of Y's.

Y's 1972 TAG
An updated tag inspired by the red tag of Y's for men from the 2003-2004 Fall/Winter collection. For this collection, the tag has been replaced with a graphic expression, and silhouettes are also available printed on each piece as if they were stamped.

Y's
Y's is the first brand created by Yohji Yamamoto in 1972, and with it, it represents Yamamoto's thoughts and philosophy on clothing making. Y's origins lie in the concept of women wearing men's clothing, and the creation of clothing for independent women with timeless values. Functional and elegant everyday wear. Within its own unique category, Y's creations are shaped by universal values and unique pattern-making. The clothing is created with a focus on cutting and silhouette, making the most of the texture of the material, and placing importance on the air, volume, and balance that emerge between the wearer's body and the clothing. Founded in 1972 as designer Yohji Yamamoto's first brand, Y's is embodied in a collection that offers functional, high-quality ready-to-wear, with the current atelier team continuing the philosophy.
