The distance between Iceland's nature and people. Photographer Yoko Naito's exhibition is currently being held at the Ginza Sony Building.

Dec 19, 2015

"In between," an exhibition of works by photographer Naito Yo, the only Japanese to win an award in the Professional category at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards, is being held at Gallery 2 Space of the Sony Imaging Gallery Ginza until January 14, 2016.

Naito is the only Japanese to win the award in 2015, and his work was selected in the top 10 in both the Travel and Lifestyle categories. Feeling that the line between advertising photography and fine art photography was still blurred in Japan, Naito traveled to Europe and the United States.

His award-winning work, "In between," captures the lifestyle amidst the great outdoors in Iceland. Rather than emphasizing a specific subject, he calmly and objectively captured the landscape in a flat tone with subdued color and contrast. Naito commented, "The purpose of this work is to explore the significance of the existence of nature, humans, animals, and man-made objects, their relationships and distances with one another, and the relationship and distance between myself and them that emerges as I, the photographer, enter into them. Looking at all of these relationships from a bird's-eye view, the purpose of this work is to provoke a renewed awareness of the fact that humans live on this planet." Naito graduated from the Department of Photography at Nihon University College of Art in 2007 and moved to the United States in 2009, where he currently lives and works in New York. His awards include being selected for the Kiyosato Photographic Art Museum's Young Portfolio in 2014 and 2015. He has also received honorable mentions at the International Photography Awards, the London International Creative Competition, and the Prix de la Photografia.
