From January 23 to March 27, 2016, the Kochi Museum of Art will host the "Marimekko Exhibition: Design, Fabric, Lifestyle," tracing the history of Marimekko. Marimekko was founded in Helsinki in 1951. This exhibition features approximately 50 fabrics, 60 vintage dresses, the designer's handwritten sketches, and materials from various periods from the collection of the Design Museum in Helsinki. This exhibition traces the brand's history through valuable archive pieces. The exhibition is divided into three sections. "INTRODUCTION" features works featuring bold colors and patterns from the 1950s to the 2000s, which are essential to understanding Marimekko's history. "TIMELINE" will feature valuable archive items such as dresses, fabrics, and tableware, as well as video interviews with renowned designers. "THE ART OF DESIGN" will introduce the process from the creation of a design to its final fabric production, interspersed with rare footage from a Helsinki printing factory.
Other workshops and lectures will also be held during the period. A commemorative lecture by textile designer Masaru Suzuki will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM on February 6th, and a screening of the film "Queen of Fabrics," depicting the turbulent life of Marimekko founder Armi Ratia, will be held from 11:00 AM and 4:30 PM on March 13th. A workshop on creating the traditional Finnish ornament "himmeli" will be held on February 11th, and workshops on creating original textile designs will be held on February 27th, 28th, March 5th, and 6th. Additionally, lectures on Finnish literature and crafts will be available on January 30th and February 20th.
