"Shichifukujin" and "Daruma" will appear at Shinjuku Isetan during the New Year holidays. Make the Daruma, who has forgotten how to laugh, laugh!

Dec 27, 2015

From January 3rd to 12th, 2016, Isetan Shinjuku will host a campaign called "JAPAN SENSES" on each floor of the Main Building and Men's Building, promoting the value of Japanese tradition, culture, and aesthetics and introducing new values. The campaign's main visual, featuring the Seven Lucky Gods and a Daruma doll, representing the month of January, has also been unveiled. The 2016 theme for the Isetan Mitsukoshi Group's JAPAN SENSES campaign is "Okashi." This word embodies keywords and ideas such as humor, playfulness, and caring for others. January is the lunar month of January (Mutsuki). Mutsumi (mutsumi) means to get along and become friendly. The store celebrates the "beauty of mutsumi," a spiritual expression of Japanese harmony that leads to happiness and a bright year filled with smiles during this month of harmonious interaction. The main visual features the Seven Lucky Gods and a Daruma doll, combining the elements of laughter and the future to create a character called the "Shichifukujin," a symbol of happiness. The story revolves around a Daruma doll that has forgotten how to laugh during training. He asks the seven "Shichifukujin," who have the mysterious power to make people laugh, to "make me laugh," and the Shichifukujin strive to make him laugh. The eight visuals will be displayed in the store's windows. The visuals were created by Nicolas Buffe, a Paris-born, Tokyo-based artist known for his work blending European classical art with Japanese and American subcultures. He is also active in areas outside of art, including art direction for fashion and opera. In 2010, he was responsible for the window display "Little Red Riding Hood's Boyfriend" at Ginza Maison Hermès, and in 2008, he was responsible for the group exhibition "Rooftop Garden" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. In addition, from January 3rd to 11th, 2016, the store's main building's 6th floor event space will host a photo event called "Kashiwade Fortune." Guests can clap their hands in front of a monitor, spread their hands, and take a photo. A Shichifukujin will appear between the hands in the photo. Another event, "Smile Omikuji," will be held. Guests can smile and take a photo with the Shichifukujin in front of the monitor to have their fortunes read for 2016. The event space will also feature a special "Daruma Cafe," where guests can enjoy food and drinks decorated with auspicious New Year's items. The cafe will also be introducing the "Matsukaze-yaki Chicken Teriyaki-Flavored Sandwich" (900 yen). Matsukaze-yaki represents honesty and sincerity, and is imbued with the wish for family peace and prosperity. The "Yellowtail Cutlet Sandwich" (900 yen) is named after the yellowtail, whose name changes as it grows, while the "Chestnut Kinton & Black Bean Whipped Cream Sandwich" (900 yen) is a dessert made with chestnut kinton, which is considered a lucky charm for abundance due to its color, and black beans, which are meant to pray for good health and the ability to work diligently.
