Dec 20, 2015

Isetan Shinjuku is selling "New Year's Items" to brighten up the New Year in the Kimono/Japanese Accessories section on the 7th floor of the main building. They are introducing ornaments and decorations featuring the monkey, the zodiac animal for 2016. Toyo Sasaki Glass in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, is introducing a glass monkey figurine (4,800 yen). Each one is handmade, with a glossy finish like tortoiseshell candy, and its face is full of charm. Available in five colors: golden brown, light brown, red, clear, and white. Other unique monkeys available include "see no evil," "hear no evil," "speak no evil," "hand massage," and "dance" poses (8,000 yen each). Sculptor Sotaro Saegusa has also introduced an iron and alloy monkey figurine. The deformed monkey has a sense of solidity yet dynamism. Items for sale include "Yushin" (3,000 yen), "Hyosei Oyako" (5,000 yen), and "Daruma Monkey" (15,000 yen), featuring carvings of a parent and child monkey.

Also, in the event space, artisans from Isetatsu, a company founded in 1864 in Kanda, Tokyo as a publisher of chiyogami and toy pictures, will be demonstrating their crafts. They will also be offering free papier-mâché "Beckoning Monkey" (2,200 yen) with your choice of a four-character phrase or name. The Beckoning Monkey is a classic Isetatsu zodiac papier-mâché figurine, featuring a humorous design, shaking its head and beckoning good fortune with its hands. Naturally, there will also be a wide selection of items featuring the company's signature chiyogami and Edo designs. Mini-sized chiyogami (1,500 yen), Pochi Memo (1,500 yen), and Chiyo Box postcards (650 yen) will also be available, along with a daily calendar with a monkey mask (4,100 yen).

In addition, Sennarido will be selling "decorations," a staple item for New Year's. They range from simple mizuhiki (decorative strings) in red and white, green and gold, and white and gold (3,500 yen each) to the luxurious "Senkyaku Manrai" decoration (33,000 yen) featuring pine, plum, and nandina.

Regarding the product lineup, the buyer in charge commented, "We have a selection of ornaments with designs that blend in with Japanese-style rooms, as well as Japanese-modern and Japanese-Western rooms, so that we can impress even the discerning customers of Isetan Shinjuku. We also have a large selection of stylish New Year's decorations, so we hope you will enjoy a casual Japanese New Year's holiday."
