"Murakami Chiaki Paintings," a special exhibition by the father-son fashion duo RYOTA MURAKAMI, will be held at TAV GALLERY in Asagaya, Tokyo, from June 10th to 19th.
RYOTA MURAKAMI is a fashion brand created by the father-son duo Ryota Murakami, who previously worked as an assistant at Written Afterwards, and his mother, Chiaki Murakami. The father-son duo began designing together after Ryota, a former designer, approached her when he felt stuck in his design process. They launched their activities under the name RYOTA MURAKAMI with the 2015 Spring/Summer collection.
The exhibition will feature new paintings by Murakami Chiaki, a "mom artist" who works as a fashion designer while also being a full-time housewife, as well as previously created designs and archived clothing from RYOTA MURAKAMI. There will also be a space where you can have a "phone call with Mom (Murakami Chiaki)."
Yamagata Yoshikazu, CEO of WrittenAfterwards and Murakami Ryota's mentor, commented on his impressions when he first saw Murakami Chiaki's paintings, "When Murakami Ryota was still a student, he was desperately searching for what it meant to be himself. One day, in a desperate bid to find his roots, he brought over some paintings his mother had drawn. I remember being deeply moved when I saw those paintings for the first time. They were pure, humorous, and adorable. They fill our hearts with positivity as we look at them. And the magnificent collaboration between Ryota and his mother that has continued since that moment may just provide an opportunity to rediscover the kindness that has been forgotten in the fashion world."
