A precision watch that combines technical and design feats: Breguet's Marine Aura Mundi 5557

Mar 25, 2022
With this new model in its Marine collection, the Breguet Manufacture reinterprets the Aura Mundi, transporting the wearer from everyday life to a global journey. A true feat of precision timekeeping, combining technical and design feats.

Traveling with just one click, the Aura Mundi was an instant hit upon its release. Three years in the making and four patents later, this mechanical watch's defining advantage is its instantaneous dual-time display, or instant-jump time zone display system.

This technical feat is made possible by the pusher and crown. First, use the pusher to display the first city, then use the crown to set the time and date. Then, all that's left to do is adjust the second city. The watch's mechanism then calculates the time and date thanks to an ingenious system of cams, hammers and differentials.

Thus, with the press of a push-button, you can travel from one end of the globe to the other without interrupting the watch's precise functioning.

A visual evocation from the everyday to the travelling

The dial of this watch, thanks to its layers of materials and plates, brings a magnificent view of the world to your wrist. First, the gold base is hand-guilloched to depict waves gently lapping on the shores of the continents. The deep-sea blue sunburst-finished base of the dial creates an ever-repeating wave motif. The continental treatment also contributes to this effect. The overlapping sapphire crystal plate features metallized meridians and parallels, while the horizontally satin-brushed coastline of the continent is delicately framed by a metallic turquoise coastline. A peripheral flange supports the various dial elements. The dial's three-dimensional effect and exquisite brilliance are achieved through various processes that require several weeks.

Details Matter

While ensuring legibility, special attention has been paid to the design of each display on the dial. For Breguet, luxury lies in the details. This is why the hour and minute hands and indexes are coated with luminous material to ensure legibility at night. The sun/moon display at 4 o'clock is hand-hammered to a highly realistic finish. The bright rose gold sun contrasts with the rhodium-plated moon, its gray hue lending it a mysterious air. The date, displayed in an aperture at 12 o'clock, is cleverly integrated into the dial below the date window, with a delicately rounded U-point surrounding the date. The delicate finish on this point, known as brouillage (blueing), is a time-honored decorative technique in watchmaking that has since been refined to produce a matte yet lustrous finish. This understated finish enhances legibility.

The name of the city corresponding to each time zone is displayed at 6 o'clock, and a metallized anchor motif located directly above this aperture indicates the city for which you wish to know the local time.

An exclusive movement

The 43.9 mm case is available in white gold or rose gold and is equipped with the calibre 77F1, which has a balance frequency of 4 Hz. This automatic mechanical movement is equipped with an escapement made from silicon, a material that is resistant to corrosion and wear and has many other properties. Silicon is also unaffected by magnetic fields. The unique feature of the calibre 77F1 is its patented module, which includes the dual time zone mechanism, a second time zone display, a programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory gear, and a day/night indicator.

This exceptional mechanical movement, with a 55-hour power reserve, is elegantly decorated with Côtes de Genève, guilloching and snailed finishes, some of which are visible through the sapphire caseback.

Ready to embark on global journeys, the new Marine Aura Mundi is available with a leather strap, a rubber strap or a gold bracelet.

Breguet and the Navy

A recognized scientist and engineer, Abraham-Louis Breguet cast his destiny with the French Navy in 1814 when he was elected by royal command to the Commission des Longitudes. One of the tasks of this commission, which included Academicians such as Delambre, Biot and Laplace, was to solve the astronomical problem of determining longitude at sea. However, it was only a year later that Louis XVIII bestowed on Breguet the title of "Watchmaker to the Royal Navy," one of the most prestigious titles of the time. Many great ocean explorers then sailed their fleets, equipped with precision timepieces and longitude measurement systems bearing the Breguet name. The Marine, with its elegant and sporty look, is now one of Breguet's most iconic collections.
