The "Civil Engineering Exhibition," offering a fun way to learn about civil engineering through a variety of artworks, will run from June 24th to September 25th at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo Midtown Garden, Roppongi, Tokyo.
Civil engineering is an essential part of comfortable, high-quality daily life, including transportation networks like roads and railways, communication technologies like mobile phones and the internet, water and sewer systems, and disaster preparedness. Civil engineering today is the result of a combination of ancient traditional techniques, modern research, and technological advances, and countless efforts and ingenuity.
This exhibition aims to provide an opportunity to appreciate the deep connection that civil engineering has to our lives, despite the limited opportunities it offers. Hiroshi Nishimura, an expert in civil engineering and architecture, will serve as director. The introduction will feature a map showcasing Japan's renowned civil engineering projects that connect with nature, as well as projections and drawings that explore the context of civil engineering in our daily lives. The exhibition space, titled "Civil Engineering Orchestra," looks back on the history of civil engineering from the period of rapid economic growth to the present day, expressing its power through sound and video. Rhizomatiks Research, 403architecture [dajiba], and the Japan Plastering Association + Hasado Shuhei will analyze civil engineering facilities such as roads and bridges through the actions of "digging," "accumulating," "weaving," and "supporting," and convey this in a fun and easy-to-understand manner through installations by a variety of participating artists. Participatory works will also be incorporated, providing an opportunity to experience a variety of works and enjoy civil engineering.
