Photographer Thomas Ruff's first retrospective in Japan, showcasing all 18 series from his early works to his latest unreleased works

Jun 14, 2016

The "Thomas Ruff Exhibition," showcasing works by Thomas Ruff, a leading figure in contemporary photography as part of the "Becher School," will be held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo from August 30th to November 13th, and at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from December 10th to March 12th, 2017.

Thomas Ruff, a leading figure in contemporary photography as part of the "Becher School," studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy along with Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth. Since gaining attention for his early gigantic portraits, some measuring approximately two meters in height, he has continued to produce works on a variety of themes, including architecture, urban landscapes, nudes, and celestial bodies. The exhibition will feature approximately 125 works in Tokyo and 160 in Kanazawa from 18 series, including his early work "Interieurs," his acclaimed "Portrats," "cassini" and "ma.r.s.", which stem from his childhood interest in space, and "nudes" and "jpeg," which question the visual and information space of the Internet age. Also featured will be his latest series, "press++," inspired by his acquisition of a newspaper's archive of press photographs. Works made using press photographs provided by the Yomiuri Shimbun will also be on display for the first time. The exhibition is being held with the artist's full cooperation, with Thomas Ruff himself taking part in the selection of works and exhibition layout.
