Artist MADSAKI spray-paints masterpieces he couldn't afford with his own money in an exhibition entitled "The World's Greatest Collection"

Jun 15, 2016

Artist MADSAKI, whose ever-changing style encompasses everything from miniature paintings and large-scale sculptures to installations, is currently holding his solo exhibition "WANNABIE'S COLLECTION" at CLEAR EDITION & GALLERY in Roppongi, Tokyo, until July 16th.

In his solo exhibition "WANNABIE'S," held at the same gallery last year, MADSAKI revealed a new side of himself by playing the role of a "wannabe," based on the story of an ignorant artist who gains fame in the market by copying famous paintings from around the world. Just as many artists incorporate popular art and overflowing imagery into their work, MADSAKI too, even if unwillingly, appropriates the image of today's art that has permeated the masses and presented it in his work.

This solo exhibition, "WANNABIE'S COLLECTION," which is part of the same series as "WANNABIE'S," is a "world's greatest collection exhibition" in which the wannabe artist has painted his favorite works that he could never buy with his own money. The exhibition also projects complex emotions such as envy, respect and awe toward collectors, who are also top players in the market. It conveys the sadness of the artist who has titled this exhibition a collection by painting works that he could never buy with his own money, and through "poor copies" that are not counterfeits, it also offers a glimpse of his small resistance to the theatrical situation surrounding art, where the whole world rejoices or despairs over the winning bid prices.
