The "Calite Fantastic! Cinema Collection 2016" film festival will be held at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite in Tokyo from July 16th to August 19th.
This year marks the third annual "Calite Fantastic! Cinema Collection," also known as "Calicole." This year, the number of screenings and content have been beefed up, and the "summer festival of movies" will feature a lineup of 71 titles (the most in the history of Calicole) of carefully selected new, older, and unreleased films across genres and borders. In addition, the main visual has been given a new touch with original illustrations by illustrator Azusa Tanaka.
The opening film of the festival will be "Everybody Wants Some!!," the latest work by Richard Linklater, director of "Boyhood." The closing film will be "Azumi Haruko Is Missing," a mysterious coming-of-age girls' movie starring Yu Aoi, directed by Daigo Matsui of "Our Breath." Based on the novel of the same name by Mariko Yamauchi, director Matsui will also be appearing on stage for a talk. Other pre-release films include "God Willing," a comedy about the relationship between a genius doctor and an eccentric priest, filled with laughter and tears; "A WAR," an epic war film nominated for this year's Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; "The Attorney," starring Song Kang-ho, about a man who becomes a passionate human rights lawyer after an incident in South Korea under military rule in the 1980s; "Our Times," a masterpiece coming-of-age film following "You Are the Apple of My Eye," and the No. 1 hit in Taiwan in 2015; and "Heartbeat," a passionate coming-of-age dance film about an aspiring professional ballet dancer and a British violinist who meet in New York.
In addition, "CaliCole"'s project to discover film talent, "CaliCole Discovery! NEW COMER," will screen "Tokyo Wind Orchestra," directed by Yuichiro Sakashita, a humorous depiction of the chaos that ensues when an amateur band is mistakenly invited to an island instead of a famous brass band.
New releases will include "The Breeder," directed by Nicolas Winding Refn of "Drive," as well as "Man Up!", executive produced and starring in his first romantic comedy, by Simon Pegg. Scheduled releases include "The Beginning of a Terrible Love Story," "The Riot Club," about a secret club of beautiful, depraved men who get a taste of power at a prestigious British university, the heartwarming "Holiday in Provence" starring Jean Reno, "The Gods Are Wandering," which Xavier Dolan reportedly wanted to star in, the Michael Fassbender action western "Slow West," the Keanu Reeves crime thriller "Expose," and "ZOOMBIES," a zombie zoo created by the B-movie scammer Asylum. There's also a slew of special screenings. This year's Eiga Himitsu Presents "Midsummer Carpenter Festival!" will feature a screening of John Carpenter's "They Live," featuring familiar faces from Eiga Himitsu. Additionally, in tribute to David Bowie, "Beginners" will be screened, celebrating its 30th anniversary. Furthermore, "Oi Musashino-kan MEMORIAL" will screen "The Complete Works of Edogawa Ranpo: The Fearsome Deformed Man," while "Mini Theater GOLD SELECTION" will feature the classic "Amelie" starring Audrey Tautou. "Independent Spirit! The Golden Legend of Herald" will screen a wide variety of films, including "The Last Concert," an Italian romance film set to a beautiful melody about the love between a man and woman of different ages. Additionally, "SXSW TOKYO SCREENING WEEK," an official collaboration project, will be held, screening select films featured at the annual entertainment festival "SXSW" (South by Southwest) held in Texas, USA. The lineup includes fascinating films such as "Supermench," a documentary following the life of charismatic American music producer Shep Gordon; "All Things Must Pass," a historical documentary that tells the story of the rise and fall of Tower Records, a major American CD chain; and "Roar," a CGI-free film about living with 200 wild animals in Africa.
"CaliColle 2016" has also been announced for Osaka and Nagoya. Each festival will screen a selection of new releases from the Tokyo screenings. The Osaka festival will run from August 6th to August 26th at Cine Libre Umeda, and the Nagoya festival will run from August 6th to September 2nd at Nakagawa Corona Cinema World. Screening schedules and details for each film can be found on flyers available at theaters or on the festival's official website.
